This past week, I had the pleasure of reviewing David Siteman Garland’s latest course, Create Awesome Interviews.

As most of you may or may not know, David is the creator and host of the hit entrepreneurship show called The Rise To The Top where he interviews famous entrepreneurs and small business owners all over the world. And not only has he developed an extensive rolodex of famous people but he also makes a killing running his show through sponsorships and other streams of revenue.

Before I get started with the review, I just wanted to say that Create Awesome Interviews is somewhat of a misnomer. Sure, his course does teach you the ins and outs of how to interview people online.

But the bigger picture here is that his course teaches you how to expand the reach of your small business presence by networking and creating engaging conversations online.

This past week, I had the pleasure of reviewing David Siteman Garland’s latest course, Create Awesome Interviews.
And not only has he developed an extensive rolodex of famous people but he also makes a killing running his show through sponsorships and other streams of revenue.
Sure, his course does teach you the ins and outs of how to interview people online.

But the bigger picture here is that his course teaches you how to expand the reach of your small business presence by networking and creating engaging conversations online.

In my eyes, a more fitting name for the course would have been something along the lines of “Jumpstart Your Business By Creating Awesome Interviews” or “Expand Your Audience And Customer Base With Awesome Interviews”.

When you stop and think about it, do some people want to create their own interview show? Maybe. But do all small business owners want to grow their customer base and get more awareness for their business? Absolutely!! And this is actually where David’s course delivers.

Who Is The Target Audience For His Course?

Create Awesome Interviews is primarily designed for people who want to add a little extra oomph to their online content creation. So whether you run a blog or you simply want to jump start your small business, this course is perfect for teaching you the ins and outs of creating engaging interviews, getting to know experts in your field and establishing a bigger audience.

Currently, David makes a six figure income just from his online interview show alone and literally just 2 years ago, no one knew who the heck he was. On just a shoestring budget, he started The Rise To The Top where he has now expanded his audience to well over 250k visitors a month. Over the course of just the last few years, he has signed on over 500,000 dollars in sponsorships from big names like Hubspot and other well known companies.

He has also been been invited to speak at many major conferences as well. But most importantly, he now knows and has become friends with over 250 of the world’s top entrepreneurs and business owners! In other words, not only is he making money by interviewing people but he also has established invaluable business connections in the process!

How This Course Can Help Jumpstart Your Business

While I can’t speak for everyone else, I can think of many ways that I’m going to be applying his course to my existing businesses. “Create Awesome Interviews” has inspired me to rethink the way I run my blog and online store content. For example, I already know many successful shop owners that I could interview for my blog and I’m sure that their stories would be inspiring to my audience. For my online store, I could interview famous people in the wedding industry. The simple act of associating well known leaders with my small businesses would lend instant credibility as well.

David’s course teaches you everything that you need to know about how to proceed. You’ll learn

How to get busy people you want to interview to say “YES!” to your interview request (without stalking them) even if you are just getting started.

How to meet pretty much anyone you want to meet by leveraging your interviews

How to keep your interviews running smooth and natural without awkward pauses.

Everything you need to know about how to setup an interview from a technical standpoint

How to create your own irresistible interview-based web show that sticks out from the pack and matches your personality and passion.

How to make money through sponsorships and other forms of income

What I like about the course is that David is willing to reveal actual revenue numbers and the exact scripts that he uses to conduct his interviews and get in touch with clients. In other words, he is really transparent about all of his operations. Personally, I learned a lot about the world of sponsorships which is an area that I had no clue about.

Is This Course For You?

If you run a blog or own a small business that you feel needs an extra boost, then I would go and checkout his course. Right now, he’s actually giving away 4 free video tutorials. If you like what you see from these 4 videos then you might want to consider signing up. Otherwise, you can simply enjoy the free content and run with it.

On a personal level, I love everything this guy puts out so I just want to acknowledge that I’m already biased in his favor. At the very least, go check out his show and watch some of his work.
If you’ve never heard of her, you should check out her story by reading her guest post on my blog because she’s got a great story to tell.
And if you don’t feel like reading the entire article, here’s an executive summary. In a nutshell, Laura graduated from college and started out her entrepreneurial career by forming her own web design consulting business.

While this consulting gig was moderately profitable, the main problem with her business model was that she spent so much of her own time looking for new clients and catering to their needs that it became a chore to grow her revenues. After getting fed up with having to scramble for new business day in and day out, she decided to fire all of her existing clients without a backup plan and decided to start her own social media newsletter instead.

As she attracted more and more fans with her newsletter, she gradually became known as a social media expert. And as a result, she decided to invest her time educating the masses about the best way to use social media for their businesses. Today, she offers several courses on how to master different social media mediums such as Twitter and Facebook and her courses make her a healthy six figure income every year.

Facebook Fame

Her latest creation is an Amazon Kindle book called Facebook Fame which I had the pleasure of reviewing this past weekend. If you are interested in creating a Facebook presence for your business, then her latest Kindle ebook is a great way to get started. Her book offers a full on tutorial on how to create a Facebook Fan page, how to attract fans and the most effective ways of promoting your business via Facebook.

As you all may or may not know, I’ve been dabbling in Facebook as well with my online store and I’ve been playing around with the platform for the past year. As I read through Laura’s book, one of the main thoughts that ran through my head was that I wish I had this book earlier in the year when I had no clue what I was doing. In fact, I probably could have saved a couple of weekends by following her tutorials instead of learning everything by trial and error.

Do you remember the Facebook Fan Gate tutorial I created a while back? That short tutorial literally took me a few weekends to make because I was completely clueless at the time. As of this moment I have no idea what Laura is going to price her book at (most kindle books are $9.99 or less), but whatever she decides to sell it for will easily pay for itself in the time that it will save your business.

Check Out Her Site

In any case, if you are a bit hesitant about investing in social media for your business, just keep in mind that your strength on the various social media outlets will become more and more important over time. For example, Google has stated already that Google Plus votes, Facebook Likes and Twitter will have an effect on your search rankings in the future if it’s not already being taken into account. Especially if you don’t have a strong social media presence with your shop, you should at least get to know the basics which is what Laura’s book provides.

Anyways, if you are even remotely interested in learning more about her book and the other courses she has to offer, Laura is having an official book launch party where you can ask her questions directly and download a free chapter of the book.

Click here to get more information about her book and download a free chapter

So go ahead and check out her book and the other courses she has to offer. Worse case scenario, sign up for her newsletter and get a bunch of weekly newsletter tips sent to your inbox for free. You won’t be disappointed.

That one little comment led to an email conversation and before you know it, I became a loyal fan of his television show “The Rise To The Top”. After getting to know him these past few years, I have to say that David is probably one of the most energy-filled and enthusiastic people that I know and he’s a true entrepreneur at heart.

About The Book

Anyways, enough with the small talk. After all, I don’t want to flatter David too much in case he reads this. How’s his book? Let’s just say that I read it cover to cover in one sitting as soon as I received it in the mail. If I were to describe the book in one word, I would call it “inspiring”. The book isn’t a how to guide per se, nor is it written like a textbook. The book reads exactly like how David talks, full of enthusiasm.

By telling us a series of stories, David takes us on a journey on what it takes to run a successful business in today’s day and age. The big media conglomerates don’t own the marketing and advertising world anymore. David emphasizes how because of the internet, the little guys can now take on the big boys without a huge marketing budget.

Does he know what he’s talking about? Let’s just say that he’s started several businesses from the ground up, has had a television show and a successful blog, and he’s interviewed thousands of successful entrepreneurs. In fact, the book cites many interesting tips that he has learned while talking with some of the top business and marketing experts around. People like Tony Hsieh, Seth Godin and Chris Brogan are just a few of the big names mentioned in the book.

What Can I Expect To Learn?

Aside from being inspiring, David covers many topics that are designed to get us up off our butts and to instill confidence that we can succeed in a web related business if we just give it a shot. Here are some of the topics and strategies that are covered

How to create a company that caters directly to the people as opposed to being just another business

How to become a trusted resource and how to build a tribe

How to market your business effectively for free

How to create a shareable and spreadable website

How to truly connect with people

In case you haven’t guessed already, I highly recommend the book. It’s a quick read (I finished it in about 2 hours) and you’ll come away feeling refreshed and pumped up to start a business. In a nutshell, if you need a dose of motivation, pick up the book. If you need a kick in the pants, pick up the book. If you just want to learn about the right way to run a business, pick up the book.
Charlie also runs a blog called Charlie Hoehn’s Musings that you should check out as well.

These past few years have been tough for most people. The economy has been in the dumps and many of you have lost your jobs. Judging by my email inbox, several of you are just scraping by and a good number of you are taking a stab at being your own boss because you have no other recourse.

The job market has been especially tough on recent graduates of college. After all, why would anyone hire a college graduate when you can get an experienced person willing to work for the same amount of money?

Well Charlie happened to be one of those people who graduated from college and was unable to find a job. But instead of wallowing in despair or taking any crappy job just to get by, Charlie took charge of his life and is now kicking ass.

Do You Want Your Dream Job?

In his 30 page ebook, Charlie tells his story of how he went from not being able to find a job at all to doing something he absolutely loves for a living. In fact, he reveals the exact steps and tactics that he used to land his dream job.

The key takeaway is that it is always possible to improve upon your personal situation and turn things around no matter what the situation. In Charlie’s case, it only took him a year to completely transform his life. Did I mention that Charlie is only 23?

What Exactly Has He Done In The Past Few Years?

Charlie’s resume is already impressive and he’s still young. This is what he’s done in a short period of time

He was one of the chief strategists in creating Ramit’s book, I Will Teach You To Be Rich, a New York Times bestseller, Wall Street Journal bestseller, and #1 Amazon bestseller

He has written scripts, filmed, and edited comedy videos that were collectively seen over 80,000 times

He has worked with Ramit Sethi, Tim Ferriss, Tucker Max and other famous people

He participated in Seth Godin’s MBA program

Most people who are much older than Charlie have accomplished far less and he still has a long way to go.

About The Book

Even though I often write about entrepreneurship and taking charge of your life here at MyWifeQuitHerJob.com, I found Charlie’s writing especially passionate and fresh. It’s not some fluffy, feel good piece. Quite the contrary, Charlie tells it like it is and outlines how you can overcome adversity regardless of the economy.

In any case, I’ve probably rambled on long enough. It’s not like you don’t have access to the book because it’s absolutely free. Oh and don’t be swayed by the title. The book is not just for recent graduates.
After all, even though my wife and I run a business together, we have no intention of selling it anytime soon. And because we aren’t selling, I never really thought about how much our business would be worth to a third party buyer.

But as I started reading the book, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that this book is less about how to sell a business as it is about how to create an autonomous and scalable business that has a high growth potential. I guess these two things naturally go hand in hand, but I didn’t make the correlation based on the title of the book alone.

It just so happens that my wife and I are currently trying to scale our business right now and reviewing this book came in a very timely manner. In any case, before I get into the guts of the book, here’s a brief background of the author, John Warrillow.

About The Author

John Warrillow is an entrepreneur, author and speaker who has started and sold 4 companies. His most recent business venture was a consulting firm that he transformed in a recurring subscription based business which he sold in 2008.

In addition, he has written several other books and is the founding producer of the nationally syndicated radio show, Today’s Entrepreneur. Honestly, I’ve never heard of John before reading his book, but he seems to have an excellent background. Plus, he was recently recognized by BtoB magazine as one of America’s most influential business marketers.

My Thoughts On the Book

First off, I really enjoy John’s writing style. When I first cracked open the book, for some reason I was expecting it to be written like a textbook. “Do this and this and you can create a company that is scalable”. “Here are the 8 steps to take to sell your business”…etc…

However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the book was written almost completely as a narrative. John illustrates his points by telling a story about how a fictional business owner named Alex is working his butt off with his business but barely getting by. In the story, Alex runs a service oriented marketing firm and his main problem is that he is the entire business. Because the book is written like a story, it makes it quite a quick and enjoyable read. In fact, I finished the book in one sitting and it was like reading a good novel.

In terms of value, many of the principles outlined in the book are useful to all business owners. However, entrepreneurs who run service oriented businesses will benefit the most. The fact is that most service oriented businesses are hard to scale because often times the business owner is the business itself. In Built To Sell, John does a great job of detailing how even a service based business owner can create a business that is scalable and sellable. One of John’s main points is that entrepreneurs should focus on creating systems as opposed to just providing services.

Who Should Read This Book?

As I mentioned before, my wife and I are currently trying to scale our business. But we are still way too involved in the business itself. Even though we have some hired help, we still handle too many of the day to day tasks ourselves. Reading “Built To Sell” reinforces the fact that in order for us to expand, the natural next step is to take ourselves out of the equation.

If you run a business and find yourself in a similar situation, then this book is for you. Especially if you run a service oriented business, John will teach you how to create systems to make your business scalable. Even if you have no intention of selling your current business, the steps outlined in John’s book are necessary to take for any growing company.

For my wife and I, this book couldn’t have come at a better time. At only about 150 pages, this book is a good read for any business owner and it’s entertaining as well!
For all of you who are not doing email marketing for your business, you really should consider doing so. Having an email list or newsletter is the best way to mobilize your audience to take action. It’s also a great way to maintain an active community of readers/customers for your site. For all of you who are not doing email marketing for your business, you really should consider doing so. Having an email list or newsletter is the best way to mobilize your audience to take action. It’s also a great way to maintain an active community of readers/customers for your site. In any case, this post is not about trying to convince you to use an email marketing provider, but if you are in the market for one, this review may help you out.

What Initially Attracted Me To MailChimp

Honestly, what attracted me initially to Mailchimp was that they offer a trial period in which their service is free for up to 500 subscribers (Updated: You now get up to 2000 free subscribers but there’s a major limitation on the number of emails you are allowed to send).

I know, I’m cheap. I can’t help it. The Asian in me always prevails. Even though all of the top bloggers use Aweber, I opted for Mailchimp because of the free startup cost. That and my buddy Sid Savara was also using MailChimp and highly recommended the company. Anyways, in using both email providers extensively and having learned the ins and outs of both services, I discovered the pros and cons of each which I’ll enumerate below.

Who Has The Better Form Design Tools?

If you are a half decent web designer, you’ll definitely prefer Mailchimp over Aweber in terms of form design. Mail Chimp let’s you either design your forms entirely from scratch or use their GUI to design a professional looking form. They have many templates to choose from, but if you want to do everything yourself, they also give you the raw code and you have full control over the look and feel of everything. I found that the design freedom that MailChimp provides was especially useful when designing popup forms.

Aweber on the other hand, seems to steer you towards using one of their pre-baked form templates. If you stray from their template, then you have to do a little bit of hacking to get things looking the way you want. For example, getting the popup signup form working on Aweber the exact way I wanted it to look took me several hours.

I basically had to download the javascript from their site, figure out how their code was written and then tailor it to how I wanted it. Otherwise, I would have been limited to their templates which I didn’t really like. In addition, the Aweber popup code didn’t work properly across all web browsers and I had to fix this manually. (Updated: This problem has been rectified)

Mailchimp also offers a more flexible interface with which to design HTML emails and they’ll also host the images for you. Aweber does not offer an image hosting service as far as I can tell. Overall however, even though I like MailChimp’s interface better, their website is significantly slower than Aweber’s because of all of the graphical functionality baked into the UI.

Edge: MailChimp

Who Has Better Email Tracking?

When I first switched over from Mailchimp to Aweber, I immediately noticed how much better Aweber’s email tracking capabilities are compared to MailChimp. With Aweber, you can tell exactly who has opened your email and exactly which links that they have clicked on and when. With Mailchimp out of the box, you don’t have any of this information.

Instead, MailChimp puts stars next to each of your subscribers which provides a vague metric with which to measure the quality and interest of your readers. In addition, MailChimp does not track users who sign up for your newsletter but don’t confirm their email.

Aweber is also better when it comes to tracking clicks within an email. Whenever you use a link in an email with click tracking enabled, Aweber displays the link using the exact same URL from your domain. Mailchimp on the other hand, uses a super long and obscure link which is then redirected over to your site.

In general, readers are more hesitant to click on links with a super long and cryptic URL. With Aweber, the destination URL points straight to your domain and the click is still tracked. As a result, I’ve seen a dramatic increase in click throughs when I made the switch.

In addition to all of this, Aweber also provides conversion tracking if you sell products and you can also track how each reader traverses through your website from an email campaign. Overall, Aweber is much more powerful than MailChimp when it comes to tracking users.

Edge: Aweber

Who Has Better AutoResponders?

Both MailChimp and Aweber offer an easy way to set up a series of follow up emails. However, both have their pros and cons with the way their auto responders are implemented. What I like about Mailchimp is that you can setup autoresponders such that only a subset of your email list will receive your follow-up emails based on when they signed up for your newsletter. For example, if I only want recent subscribers from the last month to receive one of my autoresponders, I can simply specify this using MailChimp’s autoresponder interface.

With Aweber however, this is not that easy to do. With Aweber, each and every one of your subscribers is tagged with a message number which indicates which followup emails they have received already. To prevent a subscriber from receiving a specific followup email, you must set the subscriber’s message number to be higher than the email sequence number.

For example, if a particular subscriber’s message number is 4, that means that that subscriber has already received follow-up emails 1,2 and 3. So if I have a 7 part follow up message sequence and I write a brand new followup email (message 8 in the sequence), there is no real way for me to prevent this subscriber from receiving message 8 unless I make his or her message number higher than 8. But if I do this, then that subscriber will never receive messages 4,5,6 or 7.

On the flip side, Aweber’s method of managing followup emails allows me to know exactly which subscriber has received which follow up emails and when. With MailChimp, I really have no clue who has or hasn’t received a particular email. Overall, I kind of prefer Aweber’s method of managing follow-ups but it is basically a wash depending on your preference.

Edge: Even

Who Has Better Support?

There is no contest here. Aweber has the better support hands down! Aweber offers both phone and email support during regular business hours. Mailchimp however, only offers email support. As a result, if you have a pressing issue or question, you will have to wait up to 24 hours to get a response from MailChimp. This is the #1 reason I made the switch from MailChimp to Aweber. Usually support doesn’t come into play unless something goes wrong. Here is my tale of woe.

One day, MailChimp decided to arbitrarily suspend my blog from using its service. I received a cryptic email out of the blue telling me that my email service had been suspended and they didn’t give me a reason. Since MailChimp doesn’t have phone support, I had to wait a day to receive a response. In fact, because I couldn’t get a human on the phone, it took me 2 days just to find out why I was suspended.

In the end, they told me that I had violated their terms of service because they classified my website as a get rich quick scheme. Long time readers of MyWifeQuitHerJob.com know that this blog is certainly not about getting rich quick. Plus, I don’t sell anything on my blog either so Mail Chimp’s reason for banning me was completely uncalled for.

In any case after a few emails back and forth, I found out that they basically didn’t like the title of my free ebook. Sure, I could have changed the title but I was not willing to make changes based on my email provider. As a result, I had to make a mad scramble to switch email providers right away. Thankfully, transitioning to Aweber was quick and easy.

Edge:Aweber

Conclusion

There are a few good things about MailChimp that I didn’t mention and should be considered as well even though most people probably won’t take advantage of these features. MailChimp has an interface that allows you to access your entire database of subscribers from an API.

If you do a lot of coding or database manipulation, their API will allow you to easily manage your subscriber database in PHP or any popular scripting language. Overall, when it comes to design and programmability, Mailchimp is more powerful than Aweber.

However, once I switched over to Aweber, I realized how much more powerful their tracking and email management features were compared to Mailchimp. You only have to design your forms once but tracking is something you’ll be doing all the time. In addition, the delivery rate of emails was better with Aweber as well which is extremely important.

In addition, having phone support is priceless. That and getting suspended without warning by MailChimp left a really bad taste in my mouth. If they simply gave me an early heads up, it would have made my life much easier. Trust me. There’s nothing more frustrating than not being able to get someone on the phone when something goes wrong.

In any case, I highly recommend Aweber overall. If you do decide to go with Mailchimp however, I would read their terms of service extremely carefully before signing up.

One particular thing I want to highlight is that if you do any sort of affiliate marketing on your site, then I would stay away from MailChimp. After all, affiliate marketing appears to be against their terms of service. Any violation and you could be suspended without warning. It’s just not worth the risk.

Click here to try Aweber for just a dollar for the first month

In fact, I’ve become so accustomed to lumping most business books from the bestsellers list into the pleasure reading category, that I don’t ever expect to learn anything that I can directly apply to my current situation.

Don’t get me wrong, I love well written books that make me feel exhilarated and pumped up, but I tend to prefer books that make me get up and take action, especially ones that I can actually apply towards running a real business.

Thankfully, Smart Business Stupid Business is not your typical business book. Both Diane Kennedy and Megan Hughes have written an extremely useful book that is both entertaining and practical, one that I will definitely keep on my bookshelf and refer to as my business progresses and matures. Before I delve into the specifics of the book, let’s meet the authors.

About The Authors

You may have heard of Diane Kennedy before. She is a CPA, tax strategist and the author of many bestselling books including Loopholes of the Rich, Real Estate Loopholes and several others. Basically, if the book has “loophole” in the title, chances are it was written by Diane.

Megan Hughes is the owner and founder of Business First Formations, a company that helps people form and maintain their businesses.

Because of their backgrounds, they have a wealth of knowledge across a broad range of subjects specializing in business development and accounting.

About The Book

Because Diane Kennedy is a CPA and tax strategist, Smart Business Stupid Business focuses fairly heavily on accounting strategies. If you are curious about anything related to business accounting, how to save on taxes and how to maximize the profits of your business, this is without a doubt the right book for you.

The book covers almost everything from choosing the right legal structure for your business all the way to tricks and tips on how to maximize your tax savings. Both Diane and Megan share their real life experiences and include very useful and entertaining case studies to illustrate their points. In short, they make learning about business accounting almost fun.

That being said, this book is not nearly as useful unless you currently run a business or plan to in the near future. For example, if your business is still in the brainstorming stage or if you are having problems getting motivated, then Smart Business Stupid Business probably isn’t going to be as much of a help. But if you are ready to pull the trigger, this book will make sure that you avoid the common newbie mistakes associated with starting any business.

What Does This Book Cover?

As I alluded to in the previous section, this book really shines if you want to learn more about the money making and financial aspects of running a business. The book covers the following topics in depth that I found really useful.

How to eliminate the biggest financial risks to your business right from the start

How to properly setup the initial legal and bookkeeping aspects of your business

Advanced tax and asset protection strategies and how to make more money while paying less to Uncle Sam

If these topics make the book come across like a text book, I can assure you that the book is anything but. Diane and Megan have written a truly useful book that is entertaining and one that you will read over and over again. I know that I went through it with a magnifying glass trying to find new tax strategies for our online business and I suspect that you will too. For more information on where to buy the book, please check out the Smart Business Stupid Business Web Page.
In his ebook, Blueprint On How To Make Money With A Blog, Peter tells us his story on how he gained financial freedom through his popular blog Bible Money Matters.

Incidentally, if you have never visited his blog, I encourage you to check it out. He writes about a wide variety of topics focusing on personal finance and how to accumulate wealth.

About Peter

There is something special about Peter’s background story that especially resonates with me. Oh wait! I know why. Peter has his first child on the way and he now earns enough with his blog so that his wife can quit her job to stay at home with their child! I’m not sure if Peter’s timing was intentional or not, but he got to this point in just 2 years after starting his blog and just in time for his wife’s pregnancy.

People often scoff at how blogging could possibly make you significant amounts of money. But Peter obviously has the right formula and he documents exactly what it is in his new ebook. As I’ve run MyWifeQuitHerJob.com for a little while now, I can definitely say that blogging is a viable income model and the best thing is that all of the work is virtual. You don’t have to be in any particular place to write!

About The Book

Peter’s book goes into depth about the entire blogging process beginning with the very basics of setup. The book gets a little technical in this respect, but he uses illustrations and screenshots to guide even the most tech averse.

The latter half of the book describes how to optimize your blog for the search engines as well as details on how to monetize your content. Overall, it’s a solid read and especially informative if you know very little about website marketing and blogging in general

Overall, I would recommend this book to someone who is interested in blogging but is relatively new to the space. This could be someone who is entirely new or someone who has run a blog for a little while and wants to take it to the new level. Honestly, I wish I had a guide like this one when I first started out.

Not A Path To Quick Riches

As Peter emphasizes in his book, blogging does require a good amount of work and patience. Often times, bloggers don’t see any returns until about month 6 or 7 and that’s while writing 5 days a week. Because it can be a long process, it’s important to not prolong the agony by making simple mistakes. Mistakes that could have been prevented by spending a few dollars on a well written ebook.

In any case, if you are interested in starting a blog you should definitely check out Peter’s Blueprint On How To Make Money With A Blog. The book also comes with some great extras which are outlined below.

Book of advice from other successful bloggers

An audio transcribed version of the ebook on mp3.

Checklist on milestones to reach for your blog

In fact rather than reading the ebook, I listened to the entire book on my MP3 player. Quite convenient! For $30, it’s worth it. Disclaimer: MyWifeQuitHerJob.com is not affiliated with Peter, his blog or his ebook in anyway and stands to gain nothing from the sale of this book.

The truth is that there are a lot of us who are just coasting through our financial lives and living from paycheck to paycheck. And because we still manage to get by, we tend to ignore all of the little things that negatively affect our financial livelihood in the long term.

In his book, Adam provides concrete steps and tutorials on how to “unautomate your finances”. In other words, he teaches us how to re-sensitize our financial lives, to start saving and to stop getting by with excessive debt.

Who Is Adam Baker and Why Should I Listen To Him?

For all of you who don’t know Adam, he runs the popular blog Man Vs Debt. If you have never ever visited his blog before, I highly recommend that you go over and check it out. He’s an excellent writer and his blog posts are both inspiring and fun to read. If you do check out his blog, I would definitely start with one of my favorite articles of his Tyler Durden’s Guide To Personal Finance.

Now Adam’s story is pretty unique. He and his wife just “got by” for many years. They managed to pay their bills on time and never saved much money at all. But as time went on, their expenses kept piling on and they soon found it increasingly hard to juggle all of their payments. In a short period, they managed to accumulate a mound full of debt ($80,000 to be exact and that didn’t even include the mortgage on his house!).

However instead of continuing down the path to debt hell, Adam decided to make a drastic change to his lifestyle. He found that by simplifying his life and by consciously focusing on his finances, he could take control of his financial life. In just one short year, he has managed to eliminate a good chunk of his debt and now also has a fairly sizable nest egg as well! His story is truly inspiring and he shares the exact steps that he took to take charge of his finances in his book.

What Do I Think?

All I can say is that this book is Adam Baker at his best. Even though I’m not in debt and have a pretty good fix on my finances, I read his book cover to cover in a single sitting because I like his writing style. Even though he and I differ in our philosophies on credit cards and how to track financial data, his advice is fundamentally sound.

The type of individual most likely to benefit from his book is someone in debt. Someone who is living paycheck to paycheck and not saving any money. For people who already have a firm grasp on their finances, the book is less useful from a practical perspective but there are a few cool extras that he is throwing in. Here are some things the book comes with.

A 27 minute interview with Leo Babauta (ZenHabits) (Leo also wrote the foreword)

An audio interview with J.D. Roth of Getrichslowly.org

2-page printable PDF budgeting template

Minimalist excel template of same budget

Where To Buy

If all of this sounds interesting to you, Adam is selling his book for $17 here. This is not an affiliate link. In fact, MyWifeQuitHerJob.com has no affiliation with ManVsDebt or Adam Baker in any way. Hope you enjoyed the review.

How can I get the gears turning and make progress towards eventually becoming my own boss?

While my wife and I found the answer by opening our own online wedding linens store, I can tell you that it wasn’t easy finding our special niche and executing our business plan. It took a lot of trial and error, a lot of mistakes and a ton of perseverance to become successful. In fact without the proper guidance, my wife and I would probably still be sitting here spinning our wheels.

We wouldn’t have been able to make our goal of 100K in our first year of business if it weren’t for a bunch of books and a few special mentors who helped guide us in the right direction. Everyone needs help at some point and we all need to be constantly learning and bettering ourselves which is why I spend so much money on personal development products every single year.

The Earn 1K Program

Recently, I was contacted by Ramit Sethi to help evaluate his brand new course entitled “Earn Your First 1K On The Side”. For all of you who aren’t familiar with Ramit, he is the New York Times best-selling author of the book “I Will Teach You To Be Rich”. He is a fellow Stanford graduate like myself and both he and I share the same passions and the same goals. We both want to teach everyone how to be their own boss and to take control of their financial lives. So when he asked me to review his new “Earn Your First 1K On The Side” program, I jumped at the opportunity.

Now as the author of MyWifeQuitHerJob.com, I get sent a ton of ebooks and programs on how to make money to evaluate but I can honestly say that the Earn1K program is by far the best program that I have ever evaluated hands down. Long time readers of this blog know that I rarely gush about a product if ever at all, but Ramit’s Earn1K program is incredible.

What Is The Earn1K Program Exactly?

Have you ever wished that you could earn a couple thousand extra bucks to help pay the bills or take a much needed vacation? Have you ever wished that you could become your own boss and quit your day job? It’s time to stop wishing and start taking action. Ramit’s Earn1K program is a step-by-step program with hours of detailed videos, comprehensive case studies, ready-to-use scripts, personal coaching and master classes to help you do just that, make more money on the side.

This program is so polished and well thought out that I can wholeheartedly recommend it to all would-be entrepreneurs. What I like about the program is that there is no BS. It is a real down to earth course that will teach you the necessary fundamentals to be successful. Here are some specific questions that the program will answer for you.

How can I turn my skills into a side income?

How can I find a niche with money making potential?

How can I get past the psychological roadblocks associated with starting a business?

What Does The Course Contain?

The Earn1K program is not some ebook nor is it a get rich quick scheme. Instead, it is a full blown course that takes 5 hours a week and 8 weeks to complete. Here are some of the things that are included

Professional HD Video Tutorials

Group Calls and Private Forums

Ready To Use Scripts – For example, Ramit will provide you lists of questions to get inside your customers’ heads and get a deep understanding of your clients’ business

Access To Private Insider Sessions and Q&A With Other Freelancers

Real Life Case Studies

Private Coaching

Office Hours With Ramit and Other Instructors

Who Should Sign Up?

In short, this program is a must have if you are just looking to make some money on the side with something that you are already good at but are not sure how to start. Even if you have a full time job, this program will teach you how to make additional income as a freelancer.

This course is NOT meant to teach you how to make passive income with no work required. Bottom line, Ramit will provide you with the necessary guidance so you can make progress towards financial freedom. Once again, this is not some get rich quick scheme. This is a program that will teach you the fundamentals necessary to succeed. There is no fluff.

See For Yourself

If you are still wondering why I’m so excited about Earn1K, you should go check it out for yourself. Ramit is holding a live webcast tonight (Feb 3rd, 2010) at 7pm PST to give you the details live.
