Nice job framing this. Simple, and understandable. Think I might just be adjusting some of my prices up a bit -- part of that perceived value [I sell jewelry supplies, which is HEAVILY INFLUENCED by perception]. I've been pricing things as low as I could to try to meet my customer's price points, but that's killed my wholesale prospects. Adjust up just a little, produce some higher end products, maybe I can sell wholesale after all.

Honestly, it's not cynical -- at least not with me. It's simple bare bones survival, because I'm trying to pay a wage in San Francisco [$16.00/hr. inclusive], in a world shared with China [$0.35/hr. inclusive]. You can't do that without getting very, very smart/creative/staying up late nights.

The internet is rife with situations in which different offers are framed in a way as to appeal to certain market segments.

It's all about framing, isn't it? Influencing one's perception to make it favourable for the seller.

My favourite oxymoron - "The more you spend, the more you save".

This is good food for thought. Most small business owners don't spend time trying to price their products or services or spending time to see how they can increase the price. They tend to focus on discounts whenever they get nervous (like in this economy).

I think another thing stores do is have great values on several types of products, but high markups on others, because they know that it is likely a person will buy something just because they are already there, and it is convenient, vs. coming to that store for the values and going to another store for those one or two higher priced items. It's all very sneaky.
