In the carpet layers defense, I believe it is a licensing and liability issue.
My husband's cousin installs carpet, and sometimes he helps him out. My husband told me that the carpet installer is not licensed to trim the doors, only to lay the carpet (unless he is has a general contractor's license) and the company that he installs for will not let him trim the doors as it is a liability issue.
I know it sounds absolutely ridiculous! My husband's cousin will work it out to come back to trim the doors for his customers later, as he is working under his license, and not on the contract job through the other company.

This reminds me of a story about a local plant which was unionized...and how it operated. They said that you were only allowed to do "your job" and your job only...whatever that bit was...and that they weren't even allowed to pick up a broom and clean when they weren't busy, because that was "someone else's job". The guys were so bored all night long that they started bringing their musical instruments and would have jam sessions all night because they didn't have anything to do. Now this plant has finally closed down leaving hundreds unemployed...I wonder why they closed.

None of it makes any logical sense!
