Customer Stories – The Customer Who Didn’t Care

We get a lot of customers who purchase our linens on behalf of a large organization or for a specific event. This particular customer managed a local charity that supports children born with a certain disease (I’m keeping the specific charity anonymous for privacy reasons). She was looking for personalized handkerchiefs to congratulate all of her kids for persevering at an annual charity picnic. Sounds like a very sweet gift right?

Customer: Yes, I’m looking for some handkerchiefs that I can purchase in bulk and have a short message embroidered on them. I run a local charity and these will be gifts for the children for an annual event.

Me: Yes, maam. Our personalized and monogrammed handkerchiefs would be perfect for your event. They are located here on our website. (I then email her the link)

Customer: Thanks for the link. I’m looking to buy about 75 of these. Do you have anything cheaper?

Me: We can give you a 10% discount and free shipping on those hankies if you purchase 75.

Customer: Umm, ok. Can I get a message inscribed as well?

Me: Sure, what would you like to say?

Customer: Say something like…”Congratulations! I’m so proud…” No wait, how about…”Thank you for being…” Actually, I don’t know what it should say and quite frankly I don’t really care. Can you just make something up for me?

Me: I apologize but you’ll need to tell me exactly what you would like to write. I’m not very familiar with your charity.

She then proceeded to explain to me what her charity was for and how she was only running this charity as a favor for one of the parents. Listening to her, I could tell that her heart was not into it.

Customer: On second thought, these hankies are a bit out of our price range. Got anything cheaper? What’s the cheapest that you sell?

Me: I apologize once again, but we do not offer monogramming on our cheaper hankies.

Customer: Well, just sell me the cheapest ones that you have and then come up with a catchy phrase to embroider for me will you?

Me: Sorry, maam, but we can not come out with the embroidered text on your behalf. Why don’t you take some time to think about it and give us a call back when you are ready.

Customer: I don’t see why you can’t just design something for me, but fine I’ll get back to you.

As soon as we got off the phone, I hoped that this lady would not call back. Honestly, I didn’t want to sell her anything and it absolutely disgusted me how little she cared for the charity she was running.
