Interesting choice. I'd suggest also looking into a server based on Windows Home Server, such as HP's MediaSmart server line. The advantages?

- Backups of the server/NAS itself on dedicated local volumes (can be external)
- Storage balancing and selective mirroring (don't waste space double-storing junk)
- Automated backups of client PC's in the office/home
- Integrated to multiple online options

Essentially, it's the same as NAS, but with more protection options to cover a greater number of scenarios.

Great article, I know too many people that just don't do their backups and when they have a hard disc crash it is too late.

The challenge is always to test your recovery procedure as well. Not too long ago, my computer wouldn't start up anymore and I had to re-install windows completely. I am using Acronis True Image for my backup and was hoping that I am able to restore my partition easily. Whilst I do my backups regularly the partition restore didn't work and I had to re-install all my programs again. Thankfully I had all my data backed up seperately.
